The very name Broadway conjures up images of brightly lit building facades and a place where, for a few hours, we can indulge in a fantasy world in the comfort of a warm and inviting theatre to experience great drama, wonderful music and eye popping dance routines. The countless numbers of musicals that have played on Broadway stages have given rise to multitudes of hit songs that have become part of our culture. When these songs are taken away from their respective shows the original meaning of the song, in the context of the musical, can get blurred and indeed take on a completely independent life of its own.
Back in 2005, when I was Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic, I approached Max Reimer, then Artistic Director of Theatre Aquarius, to see if he was interested in a collaborative project that would be centred around the great wealth of music from Broadway musicals. The idea was not just to patch together a collection of songs for performance but to actually create a basic plot line for the show that would put many of the songs in different contexts and situations. We came up with the idea of three Broadway actresses/singers who were all at different stages in their careers. One was the established, experienced performer; one was the girl who had some experience but desperately wanted to be a star and one was straight out of college and ready to hit the stage running. The selection of material was a pain staking, but enjoyable task, as we tried to match songs with each character all the while making sure the character had something to say about not just their career but also the hopes and desires for their lives. In addition we had to make sure that the final selection and placement of songs could have an overall structure that audiences could understand and that they were able to follow the underlying plot. Max and I were insistent that all of this had to be achieved without any dialogue! Just the lyrics of the songs and the staging were to provide the subtext. After many weeks of research, hours of listening and reading lyrics Broadway Beauties was eventually born.
